James was the son of James and Martha Brothwood of 4 Waggoner's Fold, Old Park.

James also had an elder brother Harry who according to the 1901 census was 14 and working as a miner. James was a native of Dawley Bank ( Number 19 Dawley Bank, in 1911) but was living in Malinslee at the time of his enlistment.

He was killed in action on September 18th 1915, and is buried in the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery grave reference XL. A. 5
